Inside this book – When we sav that a handful of East Village kids started the Hush Puppies epidemic, or that the scattering of the residents of a few housing projects was sufficient to start Baltimore’s syphilis epidemic, what we are really saying is that in a given process or system some people matter more than others. This is not, on the face of it, a particularly radical notion. Economists often talk about the 80/20 Principle, which is the idea that in any situation roughly 80 percent of the “work” will be done by 20 percent of the participants. In most societies, 20 percent of criminals commit 80 percent of crimes. Twenty percent of motorists cause 80 percent of all accidents. Twenty percent of beer drinkers drink 80 percent of all beer. When it comes to epidemics, though, this disproportionality becomes even more extreme: a tiny percentage of people do the majority of the work. Potterat, for example, once did an analysis of a gonorrhea epidemic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, looking at everyone who came to a public health clinic for treatment of the disease over the space of six months. He found that about half of all the cases came, essentially, from four neighborhoods representing about 6 percent of the geographic area of the city.
1st Review – One of a very few books that worth to read more than once! The idea is simple, what makes an idea tip? It’s three factors, the people who spread the idea, the stickiness factor and the environment. There’s 3 type of people, the maven, the connector and the salesman. The stickiness factors answer why people still smoking even though they know that it is not healthy. The reason people smoke in the first place and why they keep smoking is two different things. One of the most famous sample cited in this book is broken window theory. If you don’t fix a broken window, others will think that the environment is bad and it’s going to be worst by anybody doing whatever they do. Fascinating thesis and inspire other to write book such as Unleashing the Ideavirus by Seth Godin, Anatomy of a Buzz by Emanuel Rosen, Made to Stick by Chip Heath. All are good books.
2nd Review – The Tipping Point is a fascinating book that identifies what the author calls social epidemics and explains some of the reasons why they occur. The book delves into the psychological makeup of certain classes of people who are indispensable to the creation of social epidemics. It also provides some key framework for understanding human behavior. The book is written around a set of stories that illustrate social epidemics and the concepts that explain why they occur. This keeps the book interesting and makes it highly readable. I found the book incredibly fascinating as well as personally useful. The information provided has helped me to better understand the world around me and has even shed light on the personal behavior of acquaintances and family. This book makes my list of must-read books and almost makes my must-own list.
