Inside this Book – THE ramifications of a novelist’s life are many and often confusing. To write a novel is no longer merely to write a book. The novel is only the beginning. The means whereby the content of a book can be conveyed to the public are manifold. Yet not all novels do reach the readers for whom presumably they were written. A certain number of novels, perhaps, were written, or their authors say they were written, for the satisfaction of self-expression. Perhaps all novels are partly written for this reason. Yet it is doubtful whether even the necessity for self-expression is wholly satisfied if readers are lacking. Self-expression must pass into communication for its fulfillment, and communication, for a writer, means readers. There are, of course, two kinds of writers, among others. One is the kind who wants the select reader, the gourmet in style. This writer cries down the mass magazine and the reprint house. A few who taste and ponder, who read and reread, are more prized by him than the crowd who gulp and wait to gulp again. The second kind of writer and I must confess that I belong to this classification has a sneaking and unalterable fondness for the crowd. The average person, fool that he often is, interests and amuses me more than the rare and extraordinary individual. The ways of common people are enchanting and funny and profound. They relax the mind and hearten the spirit. I can appreciate the person in a million. I enjoy his friendship and ponder endlessly on his complexities, whether male or female. But when I sit down to write a book I find myself writing about the behavior not of a Proust but of a garage keeper or a grocer, a peasant or a bandit, and since these crowd to the point of my pen so easily, it must be that it is they who haunt my subconscious mind.
Inside this book –The Writers Book PDF Book by Helen Hull – Many have succeeded, no one has ever tried to write a bad novel. But, what is a good novel? And what is it good for? By and large, there are no definitive answers to these questions. Each reader must supply his own, and then it is definitive only for him. But I think there are certain general principles that guide readers in making their definition and guide writers, either consciously or unconsciously, in their striving. People read novels for all sorts of purposes for “escape/* for entertainment, to find out what happens next, to get approval for their own sins, to find out how others have handled certain intimate situations they have been involved in, and to learn an etiquette of deportment for intimate situations they expect to be involved in. There are many other reasons. However, they go only to explain why so many bad novels are read as well as good ones. A good novel may serve some or all of these purposes, but it also must do something more.
