Inside this Book – Have you ever noticed that everything about you is perfect, in the sense of being perfectly as and what it already is? Consider for a moment: like everybody else, you are born, you develop, you grow up, you live your life, make your choices, have the things that happen to you happen to you for better or for worse. Ultimately, if your life is not abruptly foreshortened, or even if it is, you have dealt with what you could. You have done your work, contributed in one way or another, left your legacy. You have been in relationships with others and with the world, and perhaps tasted or bathed in love and shared yours with the world. Inexorably, you age and, if you are lucky, grow older—with the emphasis on the growing—continuing to share your being with others and with the world in any number of ways, satisfying or not. And finally, you die. It has happened to everybody who has ever lived on this planet. It will happen to me. It will happen to you. This is the human condition. But it is not all of it. The bird’s-eye, boiled-down view I have just sketched out is woefully incomplete, although it is not meant to be a caricature. For there is another invisible element that is co-extensive with our life and critical to its unfolding yet so woven into the fabric of all our moments, so obvious, that we hardly ever consider it. All the same, it is that essence that makes us not only what we are, but bestows upon us a largeness of capacity we so infrequently even sense, never mind honor and develop to its full expression. I am speaking, of course, about awareness, about what is called sentience, our ability to know; our consciousness; our subjective experience.
Inside this book –The Healing Power of Mindfulness PDF Book by Jon Kabat-Zinn – A computerized voice synthesizer to speak. Yet his mind, untouched by the disease, contributed to major breakthroughs and insights into some of the most profound areas of physics and cosmology, most notably the discovery that black holes give off radiation, now known as Hawking radiation, and thus will ultimately explode and return their substance and energy to the surrounding universe. He lived in a body that would be unimaginably challenging for any human being to inhabit—imagine not being able to move any part of your body except a finger and your eyes—yet managed to live a full life, marry, have children, write books, engage improbably in many playful and even risky pursuits * and became a “celebrated pop culture icon,” as described by the New York Times in his obituary, and often spoken of in the same breath as Albert Einstein. Hawking said, when asked why he engaged in such risky and challenging pursuits: “I want to show people need not be limited by physical handicaps as long as they are not disabled in spirit.” He also said: “When you are faced with the possibility of an early death, it makes you realize that life is worth living and that there are a lot of things you want to do.” His ashes were buried in Westminster Cathedral, between the remains of Isaac Newton, whose chair he held at Cambridge University, and Charles Darwin.
